Editorial Process

Post-Publication Discussion Policy
Policy Statement
MANUSKRIPTA, a scholarly journal published by Masyarakat Pernaskahan Nusantara (Manassa) in collaboration with relevant institutions and stakeholders, recognizes the value of academic debate and critical examination after research has been published.
The journal welcomes responsible discussion of scholarly contributions involving philology, codicology, paleography, textual history, and related interdisciplinary Nusantara manuscript studies.
The process is informed by the journal's Publication Ethics and relevant COPE guidance, aiming to strengthen academic understanding, editorial transparency, and manuscript research integrity.
Core Principle:
Published scholarship remains open to legitimate academic scrutiny. Criticism and author responses must be supported by valid textual/codicological evidence, assessed fairly, and communicated with respect for professional standards and manuscript ownership confidentiality.
1. Scope of Post-Publication Discussion
Readers, researchers, philologists, manuscript owners, institutions, and other relevant stakeholders may submit scholarly comments or concerns regarding articles published in Manuskripta.
Discussion may address:
-
Text editing methodologies (critical editions), codicological readings, and manuscript interpretation.
-
Theoretical arguments, philological analysis, and comparative manuscript copying traditions (recensio and examinatio).
-
Findings related to local history, writing traditions, religious culture, and the social context of Nusantara manuscripts.
-
Ethical issues concerning physical manuscript handling, ownership permissions, and the protection of private manuscript owners/informants.
-
Significant errors in transliteration, text translation, bibliographic references, or research reporting.
-
Substantiated questions regarding originality or scholarly integrity.
Comments should contribute meaningfully to academic discussion. Personal criticism, discriminatory statements, and unsupported allegations are not acceptable.
2. Submission of Scholarly Comments
Scholarly comments, responses, and requests for clarification should be submitted in writing to the Manuskripta Editorial Office through its official contact channel.
Submissions should include:
-
The contributor's name, institutional affiliation, and contact details.
-
The published article's title and DOI or permanent URL.
-
A concise explanation of the scholarly issue or concern (e.g., text reading corrections or variant readings).
-
Relevant supporting evidence (such as comparative text quotations or codicological data).
-
A declaration of relevant conflicts of interest where applicable.

3. Editorial Assessment and Moderation
The Editorial Team evaluates post-publication contributions according to scholarly relevance, manuscript data accuracy, supporting evidence, respectful language, and compliance with ethical requirements.
Editors may request clarification, revision, or independent evaluation from philology experts before determining whether a contribution should be published, forwarded to the original authors, or handled under a separate ethics procedure.
Comments containing defamatory statements, discrimination, personal attacks, unsupported accusations, or unauthorized disclosure of private manuscript ownership information may be declined.
Submission does not guarantee publication; the journal retains editorial discretion over the suitability, form, and handling of post-publication contributions.
4. Authors' Opportunity to Respond
When substantive academic criticism concerns a published article, the Editorial Team may invite its authors to provide clarification or an evidence-based manuscript response.
Authors should respond professionally, explain relevant philological methods and manuscript findings, acknowledge identifiable errors, and address legitimate scholarly questions objectively.
Where appropriate, the journal may publish scholarly comments and author responses in a suitable editorial format, with appropriate reference to the original article.
5. Ethical Protection and Confidentiality
Manuskripta gives particular attention to the protection of private manuscript owners, cultural informants, and sensitive information contained within manuscript texts.
Post-publication submissions must not disclose:
-
Identifiable personal information of private manuscript owners without appropriate written authorization.
-
Digital copies, transcriptions, or confidential records of private manuscript collections restricted from public access.
-
Protected details concerning customary ownership laws or the family traditions of manuscript holders.
-
Private editorial correspondence or unpublished manuscript research records without appropriate permission.
-
Information whose disclosure creates a credible risk of harm or legal dispute for manuscript owners/communities.
Ethical Priority: Constructive philological and codicological criticism must not compromise confidentiality, manuscript owner permissions, physical manuscript safety, or the rights of traditional manuscript-holding communities.
6. Corrections and Post-Publication Editorial Action
Scholarly discussion may reveal textual reading errors or integrity concerns affecting published research. Such matters will be assessed under the journal's publication-ethics and corrective-action procedures:
-
Correction: Used for significant errors (such as misread words in manuscripts or transliteration errors) that can be corrected without invalidating the article's main findings.
-
Expression of Concern: May alert readers to serious unresolved questions concerning a publication's reliability or ethics.
-
Retraction: May be warranted where serious problems render the research materially unreliable or compromise the scholarly record.
-
Further Editorial Review: May be necessary where evidence is incomplete or requires deeper investigation regarding academic integrity and manuscripts.
Editorial notices should be clear, evidence-based, and linked to the affected article where appropriate.
Commitment to Scholarly Dialogue:
Manuskripta is committed to supporting respectful, evidence-based post-publication philological and codicological discussions while maintaining research integrity, editorial fairness, and the protection of Nusantara manuscript holders.
