Abstract

This article delineates a philological examination of the La Maddukkelleng trial case in the NBG 125 manuscript, focusing on the 1763 trial by the Bugis alliance of three kingdoms, Tellumpoccoe. Comparing this trial with the previous one in 1736 highlights the absence of La Maddukkelleng in 1763. The research involves the analysis of the NBG 125 text documenting the trial, including the conversations of three delegations from Bone, Wajo, and Soppeng. The trial process, spanning two months with seven rounds, along with detailed records of the proceedings, serves as the primary source. There were differing opinions between the Bone and Soppeng delegations, accusing La Maddukkelleng of disturbance, while Wajo defended him. Despite the absence of a decision, La Maddukkelleng's role in Wajo's history remains significant as it liberated them from Bone's colonization. This has sparked debates regarding the assessment of La Maddukkelleng's role, reflecting varying interpretations in Bugis history. He was recognized as the 105th National Hero in 1998, underscoring the complexity of perspectives on this historical figure.
